BRITAIN’S NAVY
IMPROVED ARMAMENTS. HEAVIER GUNS TO BE USED. LONDON, March 19. Mr Arnold-Forster, Parliamentary Secretary to the Admiralty, in presenting the Naval Estimates to ■•the House of Commons, announced that the Admiralty purposed introducing into the largest warships 7-iin guns, equal, if not superior, in ballistic power and efficiency to those possessed' by any foreign Power. The Admiralty was,, he added, in a fair way to adequately supply armourpiercing projectiles without which no Admiralty would like to send a fleet into action. This announcement was received with, cheers.
Sixteen vessels, armed with muzzleloaders, would, said the Minister, disappear from the effective list. * Tho money asked in the Estimates would bo applied to increasing and strengthening the navy, which was, already highly efficient. Seamen had done excellent service in South Africa and in China.
We had, said Mr.Arnold-Forstcr, hut one testimony regarding the effective service of the Australian Contingents and the excellent behaviour of tho men. Ho hoped this remarkable precedent, set almost on the birthday of a great Commonwealth, would bo imitated with ad. vantage to thc,Empiro by Canada.
