PEBSS ASSOCIATION. AUCKLAND, March 15. Mr Witheford, M.H.R., has retired from the contest for the Mayoralty. Dr Campbell has agreed to be nominated. The Rev W. J. Williams, who leaves shortly on a year’s holiday in England, was last night bade farewell by the United Temperance Societies, and presented with a purse of fifty sovereigns. In the case of Hancock and Company brewers, v. M. Ryan, hotelkeeper, hoard in the Supreme Court, the jury decided that beer of an inferior quality was supplied to defendant by the plaintiff company during certain months in 1899 audi 1900. Questions of law as affecting the covenant of lease between the ■brewers, who are the owners of Ryan’s Hotel, will be argued this afternoon. The sum involved is £570, alleged to be due for rent.
At the third ordinary general meeting of the New Zealand Accountants’ and Auditors’ Association the reports submitted showed that good progress was made during the year. Elections for the year resulted as follows:—President, Mr A. S. Russell ; vioe-presidents, Messrs B. Waymouth (Auckland), D. Cochrane (Southland), Arch. Henley (Wellington); members, Messrs H. A. Keosing and D. B. McDonald (Auckland), A. J. Virtue (Canterbury), T. JI. Thompson (Otago), R. A. Anderson (Southland), Corkill and Kelsey (Taranaki), and A. Newbold (Wellingcon). Mr R. W. St. Clair was re-appointed auditor. CHRISTCHURCH. March 15. Mr Stringer applied in Chambers today on behalf of H. 6. Simms, husband of Mrs Simms, who disappeared with ex-Judge Martin, for directions for a trial of a suit in divorce. Mr Justice Denniston decided that the trial should be taken next sittings, before a Judge alone.
