THE CONWAY CASE
EVIDENCE AT THE INQUEST. ] V I (Received March 9, 3.17 p.m.) SYDNEY, March 3. At the inquest on the death of the i man Conway while travelling from New Zealand on board the Talune, Murphy, a steward, deposed that shortly after 8 o’clock on the night of February 19th he saw Conway sitting with a woman on a hatchway. The woman had what appeared to be a small'bottle of English ale in her hand. After sitting together v some time the woman got up and went r to the saloon. About twenty minutes 0 after be saw Conway in a state of col- p lapse. g
Thomas Mcßryde, a passenger fay the steamer, gave evidence that -he saw a woman near Conway shortly, before lie was taken ill, but could: not identify her. He had seen Mrs Smith on board the Talune.
At this stage the inquest was adjourned till Tuesday. ■

SYDNEY, March 10. Murphy, in -as evidence,said lie pointed out Mrs Smith as the woman whom ho recognised by her dress; not by her face.
When his depositions was read over, Murphy amended his statement, and said he di<( not recognise the woman in Court as the woman he saw on the hatchway. She, however, resembled the one on the hatchway in dress and build. ■ CHRISTCHURCH, March 9. At Sumner this afternoon, while Mr J. W. Butters was engaged in cleaning under a macrocarp a. hedge in Mayland street, he found a pigskin pocket-book. On opening it the contents turned out to be a left luggage ticket and a .penny stamp. The pocket-book is said to correspond in every respect with the one Conway lost at Sumner. Butters handed his find to the police.
