IMPORTANT APPOINTMENT

LEGAL EXPERT TO THE PRIVY COUNCIL.

SIR JAMES PRENDERGAST CHOSEN.

It will be recollected that at a conference held in London some time back it was suggested that this colony should be consulted as to the strengthening of the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council. Through his Excellency the Governor the Cabinet has received a communication from the Secretary of State asking New Zealand to nominate a legal expert to proceed to London, and to represent the colony at a conference to he held.

The matter was considered by the Premier and his colleagues last week, and it was decided to ask Sir James Prendergast, the late Chief Justice, to assume this important position. Sir James has responded that he will be quite willing to place his services at the disposal of the colony, and will, accordingly, proceed to London at an early date.
