BRITISH ARMY ESTIMATES.
INCREASED EXPENDITURE. . (Received March 2, 9.25 p.m.) LONDON, March 1. The Army Estimates for 1901-1902 total £S7,9is,ooo,‘"and provide"’ for* an effective force of 450,000 men. They provide for the maintenance of a permanent army of 220,000 men, the remainder of the effective forces being regarded as temporary forces on account of tho war.
The Estimates include £58.230,000 for war services, with tha cost of reparation and gratuities to the relatives of tho killed and wounded.
Tho Estimates are based upon the calculation that the army in South Africa will bo kept at its full strength until tho beginning of August, and will then be gradually diminished. Tho increase of £414,000 provided for the permanent services ’ncluctes £230,000 for the militia reserve and £150,000 for the new system of consolidated bounties. Substantial provision is made for the reorganisation of the Army Medical Departments, and for pensions to the widows and children of those who have died as a, result of active operations.
