THE PLAGUE
CAPETOWN INSANITARY,
CAPETOWN, March 1
Professor Simpson, the well-known authority on sanitary matters, lias told the Plague Advisory Board that the sanitary condition of parts of Capetown is worse than that of Bombay'. Since tho outbreak at tho Cape there have been seven deaths ,and there nro twenty-one eases in hospital. SYDNEY, March 2. As a precaution against plague all vessels arriving from South Africa are being thoroughly fumigated l and everything is ready for prompt action in case, of a. reappearance of the disease. Similar precautions are being taken in the other States. SUSPICIOUS CASE in; SYDNEY. (Received March 3, 5.17 p.m.) SYDNEY, March 3. A suspected) case of plague has been discovered on the troopship Antillian, which has arrived from Capetown. Tho victim is a seaman. Tho ship was quarantined immediately the case was: reported. As the health -authorities have been officially informed that the ease reported from Brisbane is one,of true plague, stringent measures are again being enforced. The military authorities at Capetown have advised Sir William Lyne that in consequence of tho occurrence of cases of plague there, military mails for Australia- will be sent via London. (Received March 4, 0.14 a.m.) . SYDNEY, March 3. The patient on the Antillian, whose name ivas Olsen, died to-night. He developed suspicious symptoms on Wednesday. Until the diagnosis is completed to-morrow, the nature of his disease cannot be definitely stated. (Received March 4, 1 a.m.) SYDNEY. March 3.
The medical opinion is that the case on the Antillian was one of plague, but that there is no need for alarm, as the steamer never came near the wharf. BRISBANE, March 3.
The plague sufferer at Pinkenba is a youth naniccl Kehler. Cgrativc serum is being used 1 in his case with good effect.
