The "Daily Telegraph,” commenting on the deputation from the New Hebrides, sa.ys that if what is said be true, an effort should-he made in the cause of humanity to put a stop to cruel'practices. Tlie Federal Ministry will., he .expected in the colonies to assume the function of Warden of the Pacific, and in that way sooner or later to develop as the definitely responsible head of the more or less formal federation of the South Pacific Islands with Australia. , Referring to Mr Seddon’s communication a,a to Fiji, the "Telegraph” condemns Sir George O’Brien’s attitude. It is unpleasant to find the Governor of a Crown colony interfering in local politics, and much worse to find that his interference takes the form of open depreciation of Responsible Government. ■ "From one point «f view,” says the "Telegraph,” “it would he undesirable for Fiji to federate with New Zealand, but that is none of the Governor’s business. He must not ;meddle in politics.”
