THE KAISER'S MOUSTACHES.

The German Emperor is tired of the shape of ids own moustaches. For too many years the ends «of them have turned up like the horns of an angry bull. Ho has seen this crescent over his upper lip in photographs, caricatures, oil paintings, stamps, medals and coins, iie lias been able to test the loyalty af lu's subjects by the unanimity with widen the younger oners set themselves to emulate their Kaiser. Ho has propitiated barbers and introduced a, new and very ill-sounding wow! into- the language of tho toilet room. For the last two or three years every young Gorman who was not an Anarchist wore a Ilolionzoilern moustache. Wo can, many of us, remomher Napoleon lll.’s clun-actcristic little imperial, and how all Frenchmen immediately adopted it, and how- Anthony Trollope vailed one of his charae-, tors '‘M. Lo la. Barhe do I’Emporcur, a; an appropriate recognition of its popularity. Even Englishmen succumbed to the prevailing fashion, and wore for a. time what they called, not, indeed, an imperial, but a goatee. The Kaiser’s cunquests hare, however, been limited to the Fatherland. European uitlanders have held aloof, and the Hohenaollern moustaches have not crossed the frontier. And now we have lost our opportunity for over.. The Kaiser has not, indeed, issued an edict on tho matter. But ho has done- something in its results quite as autocratic. He has untwisted the curly ends of his moustache, brushed that- upturned decoration straight cut, and shown himself to his subjects with a new face. After this wo may expect a fresh issue from the Mint a j Berlin.
