THE .MINISTERIAL POLICY. CRITICISM OF MR BARTON’S SPEECH. SYDNEY, January 18. The ‘‘Sydney Morning Herald” says .that while Air Barton, in his speech at Maitland, was not as definite as was anticipated, ho made clear that he would submit a policy based on the linos of a moderate protective tariff. BRISBANE, January 18. The “Courier,” in a review of .Air Barton’s speech, ‘remarks that a white Australia calls upon Queensland to select the strongest Queenslander for the vacant, portfolio. The paper regrets that Mr Philp is unable to join, as he would have shown Mr Barton where ho .was in error in regard lo black labour.
MILITARY ORGANISATION. SYDNEY, January 18. In his speech at Maitland Mr Barton said that the Ministry did not intend to make any appointments to the judiciary until Parliament had decided linw it would mould the legislation wlm-h the Government would present. “We were not going to be carried away by a, spirit of military aggression,” said Mr Barton, “but he wanted to be able to say that whatever aid we expect the Empire to render us in the time of our need we were ready to render her as a matter of common fairness.”
DIFFERENT POINTS OF VIEW. (Received January 18, 10.56 p.m.) MELBOURNE, January IS. The “Age” states that Mr Barton’s policy is staunch and strong, and the note of liberalism is a sound one of protection. The “Argus” characterises Mr Barton’s references to the tariff ns “indefinite phrases,” and concludes that the federal tariff will he one of moderate protection. THE PREMIERSHIP OF VICTORIA. (Received January 18, 30 56 p.m.) MELBOURNE.'January 18. The Hon J. A. Isaacs (Attornoy-Gen-cial) will decide on Monday whether he will accept tha State Premiership cr cuter the Federal Parliament.
