THE WINE TRADERS’ PROTEST,

ACTION OF MERCHANTS

(Received April 28, 12.55 a.m.) LONDON, Thursday. The win© traders of the city have protested against the proposed increase of wine duty. They say the increase is likely to cause a disturbance in buying and selling, and will inflict special hardships on Australian producers. Several speakers at a meeting of merchants threatened to abstain from making any clearances of French wines.

It was resolved to seek an interview with Sir M. Hicks-Beach, Chancellor of the Exchequer, on the subject.

LONDON, Thursday. The Radical members during the discussion in the House of Commons on the Budget proposals, criticised the increased wine duties, on the ground of injustice to the colonial trade.
