ACCUSED BEFORE THE COURT. One result of the disgraceful melee between several constables and man-o’-wars-men in Lambton quay on Sunday night was the appearance before tho Police Court yes* terday morning of First-Class P.O. Francis Barnes, of H M.S. Tnurauga. on a charge of having assaulted Constable McLeod, and a civilian named A. Hepworth for resisting Constable Cameron. It was alleged that H« pworth had behaved in a moit reprehensible manner, inciting the bluejackets on to farther riot and at the same time obstructing the police. The accused, who assorted that it was a physical impossibility to as had been stated, was severely reprimanded by the Bench ard fined in detault three days’ imprisonment. After some discussion with regard to Barnes, an adjournment was granted until Wednesday to allow of the appearance of a seaman (Brown) who escaped during the fight. Barnes asked to be allowed to return to his ship, and the Inspector said he would have no objection if an officer of the vessel would undertake to return the man to tho police. Messrs fuatin and Bannister were the presiding Justices. Constable McLeod was severely handled, and yesterday had to remain in bad as the result of a violent k ck i i the stomach The man James Brown, wanted by the police in connection with the ficht, was arrested on H.M.B.
