Mr James E. Dawson, who ha* been appointed pilot to the Wellington Hatbmr Board, subject to a formal examination by Captains Johnson and Edwin, is a native of Auckland. Latsr on he entered the service of the Now Zealand Shipping Company, making one trip as second and another as chief officer of the ship Waimate. He passed his examination for a master’s certificate at Newton’S Navigation Scbdol, London, in 1816, and came out to the colony as chief officer of tho Government steamer Ttitanokai. Be next joined the Union Company’s service as third officer of the Rakanoa, and recently acted in the game capacity on the Flora* He left the latter steamer to join tho Wainui as second officer, which position he still holds.
