ANGLING AT WAINUI-O-MATA.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, — I have read the letter by Mr H. E. Butler that appeared in your issue of the 12th instant, and though I am quite as disinclined as he is to enter into a further discussion-on the above subject, I feel that I cannot let hi? remarks pass unnoticed. His complaint is that it is unsportsmanlike on the part of the Wainui anglers to fish that stream at present, on account of the scarcity of feed there. Were he an observer of Nature, he would know that, during the summer months, insect life of every sort teems on all our streams and rivers, and in consequence of the abundance, at times, of caterpillars, grasshoppers, and other wingless insects, it is sometimes very difficult to get the fish to take the artificial fly. I hardly think that Mr Butler is entitled to take up such a lofty standpoint on the ethics of true sportsmanship, seeing that he makes the admission of having frequently shot salmon with a Winchester rifle. —I am, &c., “ PisCATOR.” Wellington, 14th December, 1896.
