SIR R. STOUT AT WANGANUI.

THE LEADERSHIP OF THE LIBERAL PARTY.

By Telegraph.—Press Association. "Wanganui, August 5.

The Wanganui Women’s Political League held their annual meeting in the Oddfellows’.'Hall on Saturday night, when a large audience was addressed by Sir E. Stout on “ Women’s Mission in Politics.” In his introductory remarks. Sir Robert Stout said that pleasant and sad memories were associated with Wanganui. He referred to his long intimacy with the late Mr John Ballanoe, and said but for his request he would not now be in politics. He would go further and make a statement which was never before spoken from any platform or written in any paper. It was the late Premier’s request and dying wish that he should come in and lead the Party he (Mr Ballanoe) had led, as he feared the Party being led by someone unfitted to the position; Sir Robert felt this explanation due to the memory of the late Mr Ballance, and none could say that at this juncture he (Sir Robert) desired to make it for personal aggrandisement.
