MANAWATU NEWS.

(OT7R OWN CORRESPONDENT.) Palmerston North, June 11. The balance of the plant and remaining effects of the Longburn Cheese and Dairy Produce Factory were sold to-day by Mr G. M. Snclson, of this town, Auctioneer. The prices realised were fairly good, one of the principle purchasers being Mr Chow Chong, of Eltham, Taranaki, an extensive mann. facturer of dairy produce. The proceedings before the Licensing Committee at Ashurst yesterday, the result of which I wired, were very “spicy”—ia fact, it would be treading on dangerous ground to report them fully. Very high words passed between the solicitors engaged on cither side, and accusations and recriminations were freely bandied about between the applicants and opponents. It is said that more will be heard of the matter in another Court.

Weather, fine, and apparently settled. Barometer, 29.75, steady, June 12. A local industry of which very little mention has hitherto been made is the tannery and tellmongery at Terrace End. This business, as far as the fellmongery is concerned, was formerly carried on by Mr A. Peterson, bnt was taken over some few months ago by Mr W. Macmillan, who has for the past six years carried on the business of fellmonger at Awahnri. Considerable alterations and extensions have been made by Mr Macmillan, who has put down pits for tanning both hides and pelts. Some of the first samples produced from the works have been shown mo, and I have it upon the best local authority, supported by the opinion of one of the largest and best tanners in the North Island, that these are as good marketable commodities of their kind as can be produced in Now Zsaland. This is an important industry, which, when folly developed as contemplated by Mr Macmillan, will give employment to a very considerable number of bande, and should materially odd to the commercial prosperity of the district, and to the value of property at Terrace End. The train from Wellington, due here at 11.30 to-day. did not arrive until X o’clock, the reason assigned being a slight breakage of the machinery of the looomotive, which took , place at Levin. A part of the load of empty trucks having been taken off, the passenger carriages were brought through to Longburn at a reduced rate of speed.

At yesterday's meeting of the Manawatu Road Board Mr D, Grant, chairman, inveighed strongly against the AuditorGeneral, bis decision, and bis mode of conducting the recent enquiry. He characterised the whole pro.-eedings as a farce,(and suggested that the investigation should he reopened before Parliament, The weather is still fine, the barometer reading Sfi'os, steady.
