PER PRESS ASSOCIATION, Dunedin, Juno 10. At the Police Court to-day, Percy Austin Quinlan, a respectably dressed young man, was committed for trial for obtaining £5 by false pretences. Ha was staying at the City Hotel, and represented to the landlord that money was to be paid into his account by Mr Moffet, of Invercargill. The landlord cashed a cheque received by the billiard-marker from accused, but when paid into the bank it was found accused bad no acconnt. A second charge of obtaining £6 was dismissed, as the statement that the accused hid money on account' with Moffet had not been contradicted.

The Land Board to day resolved to ask the Crown Solicitor it an enquiry can be held, under subsections 2 or 3 of “The Land Act, 1885,” into the casa of a pastoral deferred payment licensee suspected of dnmmyism, whose license was granted in 1880 —exchanged for a small grazing rnn in 1890, having, with consent of the Board, been transferred to the purchaser from the Lessee—and whether the original lessee can, under these circumstances, be prosecuted under section 29 for having made a false declaration.

At the meeling of the City Council tonight a motion to adopt the Public Bodies Powers Act, 1887, was lost by 7 to 3. It was pointed cat that the Corporation rentroll was about £13,000, of whioh only £350 was in arrear, and that very few private landlords were in such a position. To adopt the Act would probably mean a loss of £3009 a year, to meet whioh an increased rate of 3d in the pound would be required.
