MASTERTON NEWS.
(from our own correspondent. ) April 14. Tho followers of football in this district seem to be more energetic than ever this season, which has already been opened by the Masterton Club receiving a defeat at tho hands of fche-Feilding team on Easter Monday, tho latter players being in good tiaining compared with the home team, who were in very bad form. The defeat, however, was not very severe, the visitors getting a goal 1 from a mark and the local men securing a ■ try. The Feilding men played Grey town'last Tuesday, which resulted in a draw. The Masterton Club expect to send a team to play Woodville, Palmerston, Feilding, and Wellington toward the end of May. A fire occurred on the Upper Plain on Saturday night last, by which eight stacks of wheat, the property of Sir . John Hessey, v»ere destroyed. The origin is unknown, and as tho insurance is not heavy Mr Hessey will be a loser to the extent of about LIOO. Through the opening of the shooting season this year being 'later than usual, birds will have a tihance -to get in good condition, and as they appear to be more numerous than usual some good bags should be made. The local brewer was fined LSO and costs on Thursday last, and his utensils forfeited, for an infringement of the Peer Duty Act.
