At the inquest on John Richards, found dead in bed, a verdict was returned of death from natural causae.

A deputation of Good Templars waited on the Hon. T. Dick to urge that special policemen be detailed to enforce the prohibitory clauses of the Licensing Act and to suppress Sunday trading. Mr Dick thought the result would be that publicans would look after that, and policemen and others of the force would neglect such duties. The City Council and clergy also interviewed the Hon. Minister, the former to get a site for a Lock Hospital, the latter to prevent the opsration of the Contagious Diseases Act. The replies givenjndicated that Mr Dick is favorable to action.

At the annual Horse Parade, held at the Agricultural Grounds to-day, there were 53 entries, mostly of a very good class. The colenial horses were especially good, and in the colonial thorough-bred class there were also some very fine animals. The American trotters Irvington, Berlin, Blackwood, and Abdallah were exhibited in the carriage-horse class, and excited a good deal of admiration. The attendance was moderate. Gekymodth, October 1.

The Customs returns for September are £2452, and for the corresponding month in 1881, £3227. Gold duty, £460 ; beer duty, £46 ; for quarter, £8046. Total for corresponding quarter last year was £9627. Donedin, September 30.

The vital statistics for the September quarter are as follows : —Births, 498 ; deaths, 168 ; marriages, 97. The Customs revenue for September amounts to £33,921 ; and for the quarter, £119,077, against £124,131 for the corresponding period

last year. October 1. The Grand Lodge of Australasia, 1.0.G.T.. will hold a session in Dunedin about November 22nd. The local Lodges are taking steps to secure the City Council Chambers to hold sittings in. The Union Company’s s.s. Wairarapa went an excursion trip yesterday outside the Heads with the Dunediu staff of the company and their friends. Kdmaea, September 30. James Henry King, of Adelphi Theatre Royal, had a rapture of a blood vessel last night, and expired in a few minutes. The comet was very brilliant this morning, direct east, at 4.40, at an altitude at that time of about 25deg. Invercargill, September 30.

The horse parade to-day was most successful, both in point of the number of horses shown and their quality. The nu-nber on ths ground was 29. The weather was fine, and a large number of interested parties were present. Forsyth’s rabbit exterminator was s iown in use on the show grounds, but was not entirely successful, several rabbits having been taken out alive after thirty minutes. The breadth sown in grain this season in Southland is reported to be so large as to bo scarcely credible by those who have knowledge of the district. Unless some miles of sidings are laid down at the Invercargill station and at the Bluff, there will be a serious block after harvest. At this station all the marshalling of trains and sorting of traffic is done on the main lines, the sidings accommodation being that laid down for the trade about ten years ago, and now utterly inadequate. Wanganui, September 30.

Joseph Dera Cardoza, holder of a New Zealand wine license, was sued before Mr Ward, R.M., to-day with exposing wines for sale after 10 p.m. Accused is a fruiterer, and said he was selling perishable goods, but admitted the fact of the wine being on view. He was fined 10s and costs. His Worship said be must put the wines out of sight after 10 o’clock.

Vital statistics for the quarter:—Births, 93 ; marriages, 25 ; deaths, 19. The births show an increase of 26 on the corresponding quarter of list year.
