RETURN OF BISHOP MORAN.

(united press association.) Inveeoaeoile, April 4. Bishop Moran arrived at the Bluff yesterday per s.s. Hero, and was met by a number of the Reman Catholics of Invercargill, who presented an address congratulating him oh his safe return from Europe. His Lordship, in reply, mentioned that he had arranged for a regular supply of priests for the ooleny, and said he had been able to give satisfactory replies to his Holiness the Pope’s inquiries as to the state of the diocese. Dunedin, April 4. Bishop Moran on his arrival here was met by the clergy and a large number of the laity of his diocese at St. Joseph’s. After a religious service the clergy presented an address of welcome. The laity and various church organisations are to present an address to-night, accompanied, it is said, by 1000 sovereigns. Later. In addition to the ceremonies in welcome of Bishop Moran during the day, very large numbers of the congregation attended to-night to present an address, which was accompanied with the presentation of a purse of 1000 sovereigns. His Lordship made a lengthy ■reply, stating that he would use the money to advance the welfare of the Church. Making reference to his observations of the state of Ireland, and of religion in Italy, he said the details of outrages in Ireland were greatly exaggerated, and that the people were in a deplorably depressed condition. He had found religion flourishing extremely in Italy, all churches being full of worshippers, this giving contradiction to statements of the decline of the Church in that country.
