The following cases were disposed of at the Supreme Court to-day ;—John Gilpin (the larrikin assault case), two years’ hard labor ; Alex. Johnston, forgery and uttering, acquitted. In the case of Edward Thomas, for impersonating one James Thomas at the Cheviot election, the Judge was not satisfied that it was an indictable offence at all, and reserved the point, taking security from prisoner in two sureties of £IOO each, to come up next session. Charles James Emmett was found guilty of rape, but sentence was deferred. Sentences were passed on men convicted yesterday as follows t —Matthew McCalhum, la.ceuy, 18 mouths’ hard labor; Arthur Sutton, boy of 13, indecent assault, 30 days’ imprisonment and two floggings of 15 lashes each ; J. O’Brien, larceny, three years’ penal servitude. The City Council last night voted the Mayor an additional £2OO for the year, in consideration of the greatly increased expenses he will be put to during the Exhibition period. The Benevolent Association report an increase in the applications for aid. The cases in which relief have been granted have averaged 100 per month during the past seven months. The Tramway Company have commenced to try the experiment of using horses instead of steam power on the tramways. Dunedin, April 4.

This morning Jehn Elder, for burglary, received two years’ imprisonment, and Gilbert McColl, an old offender, seven years for larceny. At the Supreme Court to-day Frank Oliver, pedestrian, was found guilty of larceny of a chain and locket from a farmer, whose house be stayed at while training for a match. William Walker and John Adams were charged with assault and robbery at Dunedin, having left a man senseless and taken his watch and money. Walker was found guilty and sentenced to twelve months; Adams was acquitted. Philip Mcßarron was found not guilty of horse stealing at Shag Valley, the defence being that the case was one of disputed ownership. A warder, named Binney, and a prisoner, named Paget, had a narrow escape from diowning in the harbor last night. They were taking stores to the prison hulk, when they were met by a squall, and their boat sank. The warder could swim, as also the prisoner, and they seized a box, and drifted down the harbor, and, after being in the water an hour and a half, landed on Goat Island greatly distressed.

A smart shook of earthquake was felt at Queenstown this morning, AUCKLAND, April. 4. At the annual pupil-teacher examination 112 candidates came up. The Auckland division of the Colonial Defence force have preferred 300 claims before the Royal Commission. At the Supreme Court sessions, John Murphy and George Howard, for garroting, got three and two years respectively; William McLean, for indecent assault, three years ; Samuel J ay, charged with obtaining goods on false pretences, was acquitted; George Powles, for alleged cattle-stealing, was acquitted. A serious accident happened to-day at the waterworks to a workman named Buokland, who was wheeling a barrow across a plank at the dam, when the barrow went over the plank, and Buckland fell, striking the ground with his head. He received a nasty scalp wound, and Buckland had a narrow escape of losing his life.

James Harrison was charged before the Resident Magistrate this morning with having, at Opunake, on 26th March, killed a ball, the property of Hakoriu, with intent to steal the same; After hearing the evidence, the case was dismissed.

The local option poll for East Ward Borough of New Plymouth was taken yesterday, and resulted in 30 persons going to vote out of 400 ratepayers, and twenty-eight voted against more publicans’ licenses and .five in favor. The scarlet fever does not appear to be spreading to any extent. One new case manifested itself yesterday, but it is a light one. Mr Naylor, however, lost his fourth child from this disease this afternoon, the four children having died within a week. There have been five deaths in all, and other oases are said to be recovering. A threshing mill and a stack of grain were burned last night on the farm of Messrs Millington Bros. The mill was insured for £27 5 in the New Zealand office, and the grain for £SOO. The fire is suspected to be the work of an incendiary, and an inquiry will likely be held.

It is proposed to form a tramway line, running about two miles outside the town boundary.
