Yesterday evening, a dinner was given to Dr. Evans, Postmaster-General of Victoria, on the occasion of his visit to Wellington with a view to establish steam communication between this port and Melbourne. Owing to the sudden death of Mr. M’Donald, the dinner was postponed from Monday to yesterday evening, and several persons, from that and other causes, were prevented from attending. There was, however, a numerous assemblage of colonists to welcome their guest and visitor, and the evening’s entertainment passed off most pleasantly and agreeably. We hope in our next number to give a full report of the speeches. '
