Clifford Bramah (all other classes). The Wellington Kennel Club was favoured with excellent weather for the opening of its nineteenth annual show last Wednesday. A large number of people visited the Drillslied in the afternoon and evening to criticise, the fine points of the different breeds on exhibition and improve' their knowledge of dogs generally. Punctually at 3 p.m. Lord Plunket, accompanied by Lady Plunket and Captain Braithwaite, A.D.C., appeared to officially declare the show open. Inside the din was overpowering. All kinds of canines from toy terriers to huge Newfoundlands yelped and barked and snarled at their next door pen mates. The place was filled with strange noises. His Excellency did not attempt to make a speech. He was received by the president of the society, and contented himself by inspecting the exhibits in catalogue order.

' The show itself was an excellent one in many respects. In most of the classes largo entries were received, and competition was generally good. The pointers and terriers were particularly good. Only two St. Bernards were shown, Wm. Barrett’s Lady Oh being placed first, and H. E. Leighton’s Flora second. Great Banes were not represented. Wm. Janson got two firsts, and W. Rogers a first and a second for deerhounds, the exhibits in each case being fine specimens of their breed. Greyhounds were not numerously represented. «■ The'first prizes went to R. M. Brewer and H. Gebbie (Waipawa). In the class for puppy pointers, E. Bernasconi was first, and Horace Smith second. Mr Bernasconi also scored in the open class for dogs. L. McKenzie being second, and Ronald McNab third. Only one entry was received in the open class for bitches, that of P. H. Smith’s, which was awarded a premier card. Miss E. Whittington showed a fine setter puppy bitch under twelve montlis, as did H. Eastgate in the novice class for dogs. The novice prize for setter bitches went to Walter Gray’s Lady Grace, with I. M. Levy’s Belton Belle second. Six entries were received in the open class for dogs in the same section. C. Reeve’s Pukuri Prince being first, and G. H. Leslie’s Pukuri King second. Boß* have the same pedigree. Mr Reey*o also annexed the first and second pftzos in the open class for setter bitches. The judge of the setters declared that they were the best lot seen in Wellington for many years. The prizes for Irish setters were distributed between Mr W. J. Adams, Bert C. Bennett, and S. Whitworth. John .O’Neill, of Westport, who had booked

several did not come forward with his exhibits, and competition was weakened in consequence. Gordon setters were represented by five exhibits, the first prizes going to Mrs_ Kernot and K. A. Rowe, while Thos. Beadnail got a second. The curly coated retrievers were a very good lot. Wm. Wand was successful in the open class for dogs, E. J. Fuller being second, and H. G. Sachtlen third.

The rough-coated collies locked exceedingly well, and some verv fine dogs were shown. In the class for maiden dogs, Neill and Rennie’s (Dunedin) Roslyn Ringleader was first, with J. Turnbull’s Stratheden Prince second, and John Horrax’s Harlech third. Mr Hayne had practically a monopoly of the premier awards in the collie classes save that for novice dogs, in which he did hot compete, and in which the highest award went to Neill and Rennie. A young bitch. Zealandia Pet, shown by Mr Hajme, is a very fine animal. Zealandia Hero, shown by the same exhibitor, is also a good dog. Both these animals secured a couple of nrsts and specials. Zealandia Bride, another of. Mr Hayne’s dogs was also very successful. Neill and Rennie had to be content with seconds and thirds in these classes, but the quality of their exhibits was nevertheless much above the average. Smooth coated collies were conspicious by their absence. The spaniels made a good display. T. A. Joynt (Christchurch) captured nearly all the first awards in the Cocker maiden, puppy and novice classes, seconds being secured by A. J. Cooper. Miss H.0. Gibbes, W. J._ Shepherd, and W. J. Leversedge. One first for bitches (novice) went to Mr Leversedge, who also gained one first and two seconds in the open classes for Cocker Spaniels. A. C. Howe had the best bitch on exhibition. The field spaniels filled fairly well. J. M. Davies’ Topsy was the best puppy of three shown. The same exhibitor also won in the open class for bitches with the same animal, while R. H. Wilson showed the best dog. No Irish water spaniels were shown. W. Leversedge was given a first prize for a brace of spaniels (any variety), and a pink ticket was also awarded a bullterrier shown by S. Burrows

The judge had no easy task in apportioning the awards in the fox terrier classes, large entries and good quality being the rule throughout. Mrs T. M. Wilford won the first prizes for maiden dog and novice dog with Winton War, as well as the “N.Z. Times” cash prize of one guinea. (Savage and Betts’ (Nelson) Hazelmere Snowball won in the puppy bitch, novice bitch, and open bitch classes against all comers. Tom Hides’ Oyama was the best puppy dog, W. H. Gothorpe’s Selby Smoociger being second. The. same exhibitor’s Linden Lionel was placed on top of eleven exhibits in the open class . for dogs. Good exhibits came forward in the wirehaired fox terrier class. J. D. Iremonger’s Victor was first in the class for maiden dogs, G. F. D. Watson’s Berenice first for maiden bitches, and E. Webster’s Chungford Nipper first for puppy under twelve months. Berenice was also the premier puppy bitch, and Chungford Nipper carried off highest honours in the open challenge class besides annexing a special prize. W. F. 0. Donnell’s Elgin Tassock won the challenge prize for bitches, J. F. Mills’s Poneke Belle being second. Only four skye terriers were shown. r J.he first prizes were won by Miss May Seddon and Frank Dyer. ’ Irish terriers constituted a strong class, particularly the sections for younger animals. David Robertson’s Mick was something better than the other exhibits. He was first in the class for maiden dogs, first for puppy dog, and first for novice dog. Janson and Clarke were also successful exhibitors in this section of the show, getting the first prizes for maiden bitch, puppy bitch, novice bitch (all with Whareroa Lady) open challenge class for dogs and open challenge class for bitches. R. H. Shepherd and D. N. Wilkinson both secured a couple of second awards. The awards for Airedale terriers, a rather meagrely represented class, were won by Mesadmes A. Williams and King and T. Stevenson. The frisky little pug with the curly tail has many admirers judging by the lot exhibited. L. W. D. Andrews was first for puppy dog. A. B. Clater’s Marlow Perfection overcame all opposition in the open class for dogs, and W. H. .Saunders exhibit was placed first in the open class for bitches. The classes for black-and-tan and toy terriers were each graced with single entries, exhibited by Mrs Stevenson and E. Bradshaw respectively. In the variety class for any breed of dog not scheduled, a special prize, donated by the Wellington Piano Company, was won by Awarua, the property of Sir Joseph Ward. This dog was born near the South Pole during the stay of the Antartic expedition there in the winter of 1900. He was broken into sledge work and was brought to New Zealand in the Southern Cross. The prize for the best sporting brace —the Philadelphia Dog Show Association’s medal—was won by two fox terriers shown by Tom Hides. Wm. Janson’s deerhounds being second, and J. O’Neil’s Irish setters third. The “exhibition only” classes contained puppies principally, with a few fancy varieties to relieve the display. The Wellington Kennel Club’s Show was continued in the Drill-shed on Thursday. The attendance of the public on the first day was good, and the gatemoney taken yesterday was again satisfactory. Everything considered, the exhibition has been a most successful ono in every respect, and the club’s funds are likely to benefit appreciably in consequence. The prize for “Fox Terrier Club’s Produce Stakes” was won by Savage and Betts’s Hazelmere Snowball, with W. H. Gothorpe’s Selby Smoodger second, and W. W. Tinewell’s Selby Sunbeam third'.
