(From Our Own Correspondent.) The contractor for the new courthouse has taken advantage of the fine weather to make a start, and a large number of men are employed on the work. Mr Bernet, of the Skeates Cycle Company, proposes holding (under the auspices of the Athletic and Cycling Club) a bicycle road race in September. The prizes will consist of a B.S.A. machine, value j£2o, for first prize; silver watch and chain for second, and gold medal, value £4 4s, for the rider making fastest time. Mr Berult is to be complemented on his sportsmanlike offer. Mr and Mrs berkahn are to be entertained at a farewell social on the 21st insifc. by the settler® of Maharahara district, prior to their leaving for Hastings, where they intend residing. We have to record the death of Mr Beecher,- which took place at his late residence on the 17th inst. The funeral was attended by a large number of mourning friends, the service being impressively read by the Rev. E. Robertshawe.

The directors of the Umutaroa Dairy Factory have decided to start butter making operations again on the Ist of September. A capital programme was gone through and after refreshments had been partaken of Mr and Mrs Berkahn were presented ion behalf of the school children) with a handsome silver mounted pocket book, and a beautiful bouquet of flowers. Mr Goldfinch then, presented them with a handgold watcn and chain and a s lver teapot and cream jug, and in a short speech said the settler© hoped that J<l_r Berkahn would long be spared to wear the watch and that his wife would long be spared to pour out tea and cream, they were all very sorry to part with such a nice family, and their. loss would be Hastings gain. Mr Berkahn feelingly responded and said that they felt very so v rv to leave., the district and would always prize the gifts they had rece ved He was qui.te touched with the kind gift from the &chcy>i children. cleared for dancing, which was earned on' with great vigour until early morn. Keen interest is being taken this year in the golf championship matches, and every game is watched with interest, several of the new members are making good progress and intend to be heard of later, the ladies are also cLoipg good work and many are the speculations as to who will win the ladies’ chamionship this year.
