FITZHERBERT WEST.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) On the breaking up of the school the Committee invited the parents and children to a picnic, but the weather was Bfj rough that it had to be abandoned. However, Mr T. Woods, M.H.R., gallantly braved the weather and presented the prizes at the school where some of the parents met and provided all sorts of dainty comestibles, and a merry afternoon was spent by the young folks. The very pretty Kahuterrawa gorge was the rendezvous of many visitors for picnicking and fishing on Boxing Day.
and the ever beautiful pungas and nikaus showed up the glorious colouring of a few rewa-rewa trees that were in full bloom, while the clear stream noisily rushing through the rocky bed or silently'gliding by some steep cliff was persistently thrashed by ardent fishers giving a pleasing “motive” to a grand scene. Land in the district seems to be still growing in value. Mr Gray has sold his farm, at <£2B per acre, while Mr Lancaster has parted with one of his Fitzherberf East farms at a very satisfactory figure. As yet there is no appearance of rust in the oats in this district, but as the season has been so bad the crops are rather backward and only a very little hay is cut as yet.
