DANNEVIRKE.

A chopping match (16in logs), between H. Stokes and A. Svensen, for a side wager of £lO, took place at Norsewood last Aveek. Svensen conceded Stokes 15 seconds, and the latter Avon by a couple of strokes in lmin 40sec. The Norsewood champioH has again challenged the winner, who has accepted, and the contest will be fought over again on the same terms. W. Cameron, the local champion, has also issued a challenge to chop Svensen. The folloAving team has been selected to represent the Dannevirke Fire Brigade at the annual demonstration at Dunedin in March next: —'Foreman B. Nuttall, Branchmen F. Brown and H. D'rinkwater, Firemen D*. Mewliiney, D*. Mooney and W. Nuttall. The latter has been chosen captain of the team. The men are in active training, and expect to give a good account of themselves. Captain Drinkwater will act as delegate for the brigade at the conference. At Wellington last week, Mr W. Ross (Collett and Edkins) was married to Miss Coombe, youngest daughter of Mr J. Coombe, of Muritai. The little daughter of Mr J. Robertson had a narrow escape from death through her clothes catching fire c>n New Year’s Day. The girl sustained injuries to her head and shoulders, but no 6erious results are anticipated.
