CARTERTON

(From Our Own Correspondent.) A farewell social was accorded Mr and Mrs J. Stevens and family, who are leaving here to ■ take-up their residence in Wellington, on Thursday evening, when a very large number of friends we're present. During the evening Mr Stevens, who is an enthusiastic member of the bowling club, was presented with a pair of silver-mounted bowls.-' Mr T. C. Several splendid “heads” have been secured in this district by deer-stalkers from various partis of the colony, and on Saturday eight pairs of antlers were sent to Wellington by train. The election of school committees took place on Monday, when the following were elected -members for the local school: —Messrs Deller (chairman), W. and J. Moore, Chapman, Daley, Kelly and Massow. A movement has been on foot for some time past to remove the Roman Catholic Church from South Carterton to a.: more central site. protest, and oven went so far as to insult Father Cahill, their priest, using abusive language, striking him, and spitting in his face.
