WOOL SALES
There was the usual attendance of buyers at the wool sales held in the Art Gallery yesterday, 2836 bales being catalogued. Local buyers were not active. Prices were easier in comparison with those of the last preceding sale of the series. Locks and pieces were in better demand. A comparatively small quantity of wool was sold, growers not being prepared to accept the prices offered. Messrs Levin and Co., Limited, report : —There was the usual attendance of buyers, but the sale was a poor one, the range of prices being lower than ever. Sellers were expecting that at any rate December rates would be maintained, as, though the London sales now current had shewn no improvement in our crossbreds, no fall had been recorded. The fall in prices was fully per lb on December rates, and all classes of wool were affected, very little being sold. We quote—Halfbred, s£d to 6£d ; superior fine crossbred, 5-Jd to 6d; medium crossbred, to s£d; coarse crossbred, 4d to 4jd; logstained and inferior, 3d to 4d; pieces and bellies, 2sd to ; locks. Id to l£d; lamb’s wool, 4d to sd. The United Farmers’ Co-operative Association, report: —Combined catalogues were submitted consisting of about 3000 bales, but - greater portion was withdrawn. Wool offered was for most part of inferior quality, the highest bid during the sale being 6jd for a 15 bale line of fine crossbred. Prices were about 15 per cent, below those ruling at last sale. The following are the quotations : —Clean medium crossbred, od to ssd; coarse crossbred, 4d to 5d ; inferior, 3d to 3£d; pieces, 2jd to 3£d; locks, lid to 2^d.
Murray, Roberts and Co. report.— At the local wool sales 2836 bales were offered, of which we catalogued 800 bales. Prices were disappointing, showing a decline of to on crossbred fleece wool, and Id to -£d on pieces, as compared with the earlier sales of the season. In most cases growers were not prepared to accept the reduction, and wo estimate that not more than 25 per cent, of the offerings were sold. Wo quote as follows:—Fine crossbred, s|d to 6^d; clean medium crossbred, od to s£d; coarse crossbred, to’4£d; logstained and inferior crossbred, 3£d to 4d; pieces and bellies, 2£d to 3ld; locks, l£d to 2£d.
The Now Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited, report:
—We submitted a catalogue of some 1200 bales, of which we succeeded in placing only about 20 per cent. There was the usual attendance of Home and local buyers, but prices bid were much below owners* reserves, and in most cases fully a half-penny lower than December rates. The fourth and last sale of this season will be held on the 14th February. We quote :—Halfbred, s£d to 6£d; fine crossbred, s£d to ; medium crossbred, 4£d to 51 d; log-stained and inferior, 3d to 4d; coarse crossbred, 4d to 4£d; pieces and bellies, 2|d to 3^d; locks, to 2^d; lambs wool, superior, s£d to 61 d ; dingy and ordinary, 4d to s\d per lb.
