THE PREMIER AT CHRISTCHURCH
DEPUTATION FROM THE COUNCIL. A QUESTION "OF ABATTOIRS. CHRISTCHURCH, Sun day. The Premier arrived from Dunedin by the express last night, and went straight on to Wellington, urgent business there preventing his remaining here to open tlie winter show. Mr Seddou was buffering from a very bad cold, caught through speaking in the open air at the opening of the Seaward Bush Railway, Southland. The Mayor of Christchurch and several Councillors, forming a deputation from the Christchurch City Council, went on board the train at Hornby and interviewed the Premier, with a view to getting legislation introduced to compel ail meat used for human consumption in the city to be killed at the city abattoirs, if erected. It was pointed out that a large meat company with its own shops had a Government inspector to inspect their meat, which gave them a great pull; ana also, that another Government inspector had just been appointed for Woottins slaughteryard, where killing was done for eighteen butchers. 'Without legislation, as requested, it would not pay the Council to erect abattoirs for the few matchers remaining. Mr Seddon said the matter was one for a local Bill, and he advised the deputation to ask the local members to introduce one.
The Mayor, it is stated, will call a public meeting to discuss the question. Mr Crabbe, the newly-appointed Government veterinary inspector lor Wool tin’s yard, arrived last night, and will take up his duties to-morrow.
