HARBOUR BOARD.
The usual meeting of the Harbour Board was held on Thursday: present—Messrs V '. H. Eraser (chairman), J. H. Heaton, T. J. W. Gale, W. Booth, J. Jack, J. Hutchison. M A U . F. LSradey, H. Beaucbamp, Captain Rose and the Mayor.

The recommendations of the Wharves and Accounts Committee were agreed to as follows :—That the Wharves and Accounts Committee be authorised to meet a oomtnitcee of the City Council relative to th*3 bylaws eo> en;my licensed porters and the regulation of traffic on the wharves ; frmt the Board's solicitor be instructed to take proceedings ayai iist the West port Coal Company, Limited, for nsmy the hulk Marie without having her duly licensed, or to take such other -tep-5 as he may advise as best to ensure that the liu k be properly examined ; that upon the contractor and sureties for the removal of th; wreck of the barque Coromandet entering into a suitable agreement, the Koaru consent to an extension of the time until the end of November, 1597.
Another clause in the committee's report stated ■. —" 1 hat a letter having been received from the Gear Meat Company, stating that as they are about to give up the u-e of the hulk Jubilee they will not be bidders for the lease of the Petouc Wharf the Board rescind its resolution of January 28th last, deciding to put up b ■ auction a lease for three years of th" whin-!', and that ihe wharf be sold by public auction for removal." The clause was struck out, and on the motion of Mr Beaucbamp it, was decided to put up fche lease of the wharf for public; auction. An application from Messrs Sargood, Son a.nd rOwen, seeling the approval of the Board to an overhead bridge on the Hunter street reserve, was approved, as was also an application by Messrs Brown and Dean, seekingthe consent of the Board to a proposed
transfer of a lease from Messrs Bannatyne and Co. +.O Sir F. T. Sargood.
The Board then went into committee. The, matter of lighting the harbour entrance was discussed, but on resuming the chairman reported that nothing had been done.. In connection with a question which had cropped up as to whether the residants of Petone could hold the foreshore between tho Esplanade and the shore, a committee consisting of the chairman and Messrs Jack, Bell and Hutcheson was appointed to go into the matter of foreshores generally and report. On resuming, Mr Beaton withdrew amotion standing in his name, " That the proposal in reference to the importation from abroad of engines and boilers for the hydraulic gear, at an estimated cost of about ,£4500, be not adopted, but this machinery, &c, if possible, be manufactured in New Zealand," and proposed an amendment, "That tenders be invited for engines, boilers and hydraulic gear as per clause of the Harbour Board Act." Mr h utcheson seconded the motion pro forma, and it was lost on the voices.
The Board accepted the offer of Messrs Abbott and Co. for the supply of a hydraulic pumping engine for .£202", with Badcock and Wilcox boilers, and that the engineer be instructed to have prepared or an entrine and boiler-house, to be built on the Board's reclaimed land at Waterloo quay.
