MISCELLANEOUS.

An interesting' *' exhibit " in connection with the Kirby trial lies in the corridor of the Police Station in the shape of the case in which the ex-detective was charged with escaping to Sydney in. Failing a " Chamber of Horrors" or a Tussaud's, what's to be done with it?

Throughout yesterday afternoon and evening week a steady stream of visitors passed through the Skating Rink, where the Horticultural Society continued and concluded its spring show. Minifie's Band discoursed sweet strains at intervals. 'J he art union tickets have gone off well, and the committee are striving to get it drawn within a few days. The Horticultural Society desires to thank the Empire Tea Company for a donation of tea.

In honour of the Exhibition, the shipping in the harbour and at the wharves decked itself out in its very best and cleanest bunting ; whilst a goodly display was also made upon many public buildings, especially conspicuous being that of the Harbour Board's buildings. In the city itself no special effort was made by our business people to render the occasion one of more than the every-week Wednesday half-holiday festival; but the people themselves in some way made up for this lack of decoration by the putting on of their " Sunday best," with even a few extras. Our country cousins, also, came out in holiday attire, and that they had come down for a good time was plainly apparent upon face and figure. Wellington's little ones and their mothers simply thronged the lino of route whilst the sold ; .ers bold, young and old, inarched from the Drillshed to the Exhibition buildings. The fine appearance of our " Permanents," in their gay uniform, with soldierly marching bearing, came in for general admiration from the crowd, the ladies especially, it goes without saying. The heatshowers that fell during the afternoon scarcely interfered with the festivities attached to the occasion.

Notwithstanding the fact that the Wellington Traders' Association negatived a resolution to keep on Thursday afternoon as a halfholiday, most shop-keepers closed their doors. The splendid weather and the show evidently proved too great an attraction. A very enjoyable oonoert was given last, week in the Working Men's Club by some members of the orew of H.M.S. Lizard. The programme presented was of the variety order, and the entertainment was a most enjoyable one. Subsequently, the mombers of tho warship wero entertained at supper. At the annual meeting of the District Order of Foresters, the reports showed highly satisfactory finances. The officers of the executive were installed as follows: D.C.R., C. F. Worth ; D.S.C.R., R. E. ! Harman ; D.T., H. Birch (re-elected) ; i D.S., A. Whiteson ; D.S.W., H. Baldwin ; D.J.W., F. Upton; D. 5.8., R. G. Newall; D.J.8., T. G. Kershaw; Distriot Auditor, C. M. King. The annual reunion of delegates was held last night, in the hall, Tory street, when various toasts wore honoured. A capital spread was provided by Mr V. Fama, Willis street. Three visitors to the Exhibition have called at the Mail Office and complained as to their treatment on the opening day. They say they went in intending to seethe exhibits, but first strolled into the refreshment rooms and had some tea, and then to their surprise wero turned out without having had an opportunity of seeing the exhibits at all. They say they were informed that it was necessary to dust the exhibits, but passes were refused them, and they were told that if wanted to come back they would have to pay a second time. As it appears, however, that it was nearly six o'clock when they were asked to leave, it may be that the hour of closing had arrived.
