LAND SETTLEMENT.
Sixty-four allotments in tho Ardgowan estate, taken under tho compulsory clauses of tho Lands for Settlement Act, wero thrown opon for application at Oamaru, and 1610 applications wero received, averaging five sections each application, and necessitating a ballot of 8000 names. Tho drawing for tho sections was concluded on Friday. Of tho successful applicants, 25 are women. Witl tho oxcoption of 11, all tho successful applicants live in this district. Thoro was mucL disappointment oxprossod by outsiders, who wero fairly swamped by tho groat number of families who applied for sections, sometimes up to tho total area allowod by law.
