ATHLETICS.
The secretary of the Amateur Athletic Club on Friday received a telegram from the secretary of the Wanganui Club, stating that Kingsley and Bailey, pole and high jump representatives, who had been selected to represent the Wellington Club at the championship meeting next month, would be* included in the Wanganui team to compete at the meeting, and therefore they could not represent Wellington. The local team will be considerably weakened in consequence. At the Halcombe sports, the Cup was won by A. S. Wilson, Carell being disqualified. Palmerston North, January 23.
At the amateur athletic sports yesterday, Bailey, of Feilding, put up a record for the High Jump—sft Sin. Adsett (Wanganui) won the Pole Jumping; Ryan (Napier),the Long Jump ; Bush (Palmerston), the Maiden Race ; Weekes (Palmerston), the 1000yds Championship; Roache (Wellington), the 100, 220 and 440yds ; Dodwell (Wellington), the Half-mile ; Talbot (Wellington), the Mile Walk; Burrell (Wanganui), the Mile and Two-mile Runs; Duncan , the Hurdles ; and Rankin (Wanganui), the Consolation Race. Wollerman (Palmerston), won the One-mile and Twomile Bicycle Races ; and Croft (Palmerston), the Five-mile. The day was fine, but the attendance small. Dunedin, January 25.
W. A. Low will be the only representative of the Dunedin Amateur Athletic Club at the Championship Meeting. Auckland, January 28.
The Auckland Amateur Athletic Club have selected the following team to represent Auckland at the Championship Meeting, to be held at Napier on February 22nd and 23rd:—100yds and 250yds, J ames and Francis ; quarter-mile, Bull and Francis ; long jump, T. Roberts and W. H. Martin; high jump, E. T. Laurie ; bicycle events, Surman and Pilkington; one and threemile walks, Creamer and Brady ; half-mile, Beere and Bull ; one and three-mile runs, Davis, Beere, Farquhar and O’Connor ; 120yds and 440yds hurdle races, T. Roberts and W. H. Martin; putting the
weight and throwing the hammer, T. O’Connor and Rhodes.
The team leave on Fobruary 12th. Napier, January 30.' To-day was observed as a holiday for the annual Caledonian Sports on the Recreation Ground. The weather was fine, but exceedingly hot. The principal events were won as follow : —Caledonian Handicap, of 100, 220 and 440yds—J. B. King (Sydney), 10 points, 1; Ellis (Takapau), and Tuck well, 5 points each, tied for second place. Amateur Handicap, same distances—W. J. Strickland, 10 points, 1; Fraser and Gallard, 8 points each. Mile Run—Kent (Wairoa) 1; Dette (Waipawa), 2; Jarry (Waipawa), 3. Three-mile Run—E. Hall (Wairoa), 1; Wyeth, 2 ; Derungs (Wanganui), 3. Derungs entered a protest against the first two on the ground that they had not sent in lists of their full performances. This will be settled to-mor-row. The time of the winner from 95yds start was 15min 35sec. 440yds Hurdle Race—A. W. Watts (Wanganui), 1; McDowell, 2; J. Dick, 3. Time, 58sec. In the bicycle events Fraser won two and Laughley two. The piping was very good. J. Fraser ( Wairarapa) was successful in the marches and the pibroch; D. Campbell (Wellington) in the strathpeys,’ reel and the Highland fling ; P. Stewart in the reel for men, Moon in the reel for boys and P. Stewart in the sheantraus.
