The balance-sheet, showing a balance in hand of 17s Id, was read, and the meeting then proceeded to the election of a committee. All those present were nominated by one another to servo on tho committee, but before thoy wero elected a householder present suggested that Mr McDermid, tho headmaster, should bo asked to attend, so as to have seven householders present, as ho understood sevon formed a quorum. The suggestion was agreed to, and, Mr McDermid having been brought in by tho Chairman, the six householders nominated were declared to be elected the members of tho committee. The Westland Education Board has beta making large reductions in the salaries of its teaching staff, teachers in country schools having, in some instances, been reduced from £B2 to «£GO per annum. It is stated, says tho Nelson Mail, that their chief head teachers are only receiving .£IBO per annum. Cheistchuech, June 8. At a special meeting of the North Canterbury Education Board to-day the committee appointed at a former meeting brought up a long report on the subject of tho revision of teachers' salaries. The committee pointed out that a large number of teachers were without employment, and recommended that the number of pupil teachers engaged by the Board be largely reduced. Tho Committee recommended that no reductions be made in salaries of singlehanded teachers, and that where often heavy and responsible work was effectually accomplished, no difference be made in the salaries of male and female teachers. The reduction of expenditure must be brought about by a less early increase than is now practical in the salaries of those masters who have obtained assistance. A comparative statement showed a reduction of expenditure from £53,203 to .£51,908, but that this reduction would not take immediate effect. The recommendations did not apply to largo town schools. Tho report was adopted.
