THE FEDERATION CONFERENCE.
We stated a few days ago that Captain Russell and Sir John Hall Avould in all . probability be the New Zealand representatives at the
Federation Conference which is to be held in Melbourne on the 4th pr->x. A meeting of the Cabinet was held on Monday, Avhen the appointment of those two gentlemen was definitely decided upon, and they will leave for Melbourne by an early steamer to attend the Conference, It is understood that their instructions are generally of a non-committal character as regards the action of this Colony in relation to the Federation scheme, but-, that they will be directed to favour intercolonial Freetrade, especially in the natural products of the respective colonies. The selection of representatives appears to us a very good one, and we are glad to learn that the influence of the New Zealand Government will be used strongly on behalf of intercolonial Freetrade, which if once thoroughly established would be of enormous benefit to this Colony by enlarging the market for our produce. We heartily hope that one result of the coming Conference may be to bring this about.
