THE CEMETERY SITE.
We hear that a petition to the City Council against the recently adopted cemetery site at Island Bay is being
circulated for signature. This, taken in connection with the antagonistic attitude of a neighbouring landholder, and the unquestionably general unfitness of the site for the purpose, should induce the Council to, if possible, reconsider the decision come to in the matter. We hope the Council can withdraw, and that all who take any interest in the public welfare will assist to that end. That a lawsuit will eventuate if the Council persists in maintaining the position taken up ought to be sufficient deterrent to any such course. There are two capital sites to choose between, that at Karori, which we consider far and away the best, and one in the heart of the Melrose peninsula, draining right into the sea. But Karori, equidistant from the extreme ends of the city, has the greater claim for consideration, and is the most generally favoured, while the site selected at Island Bay is in universal disrepute.
