MEETINGS.

CITY COUNCIL.

An ordinary meeting of the City Council was held last night week. Present — The Mayor (Mr Charles Johnston), and Councillor Smith, Moellor, Worth, Anderson, Harris, Willeston, Brandon, A. W. Brown, Pethericlc, and Fraser. Councillor Harris apologised for the absence of Councillor Harcourt on account of indisposition. The Destructor. —Messrs Noble Campbell and Co. wrote complaining that the contractor for removal of rubbish to the Destructor had refused to remove a quantity of banana stalks and peel, etc., ou the ground that the Destructor would not consume such articles. —Councillor Moeller asked what the Destructor would burn. —Councillor Brandon contended that individual councillors had no part iu the supervision of the removal of rubbish, and he moved that the matter be referred to the City Surveyor as the proper person to supervise the contract. Councillor Moeller moved as an amendment that it be referred to a sub-committee consisting of Councillors Brown, Brandon, and Anderson. —Councillor Brown expressed a hope that the Council would not interfere between its officers and the contractor. (Hear hear). On division Councillor Brandon’s motion was carried by 8 to 3. City Reserves Committee. This Committee recommended that the stipu

lation of Mrs Watt in connection with a right of way be not agreed to, and that she be allowed to take her foreshore case into Court if she think fit to do so ; that the consent of the Council be given to the plan of the Star Boating Club’s proposed new skids, on condition that the land be made up to the level of the skids, so as to allow of traffic over them ; and that the sum of L 332 10s be paid to the Star Boating Club for their former site, in accordance with the agreement made by the Council. Councillor Brandon objected to the second clause (relating to the skids), and moved that it be referred back to the Committee. Councillor Brown explained that the stipulation was made so as to keep the outer line open for promenading. Councillor Brandon’s amendment was agreed to, and the other two clauses v ere adopted. Public Works Committee. —This Committee’s report (already published) was adopted. Public Library. —lt was decided, on Councillor Brown’s motion, to accede to a request from the Free Public Library Committee that the Couucil would apply to public libraries in other parts of the world for information as to the founding and maintaining of public libraries. It was also decided, on the .notion of Councillor Brandon, to apply to the Public Association of America for information. Disinfectants. —Councillor Pethericlc, having noticed that the Sanitary-Reform Association were very active in getting disinfectants ued when drains were opened in Thorndon, asked how it was thdt they were not used for a drain in Wi lis-street which had been opened that day. Who had the control of these disinfectants ? (Councillor Brown : Councillor Brandon has.) The City Surveyor, being called in, said the drain in question was only open for about half an hour, while it was being repaired, and consequently he did not think it worth while to send up disinfectants. He noticed no smell, nor did the men complain to him. Councillor Petherick having protested that thpi e was a very obnoxious smell, the discussion ended. Tender. —The tender of Mr R. G: Knight for grass seed at the Karori reservoir was accepted. Basin Reserve. —The use of the Basin Reserve on the 18th January was granted to the Musical Committee qf the Jubilee Art Union on the usual terms. Loyal Address.- —It was decided that a loyal address should be presented to the Queen, through the Governor, on the occasion of the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Colony ; the addressto be prepared by the Mayor, the Town Clerk, and the City Solicitor. Next Meeting. —The Council at its rising adjourned till the evening of Friday, the 24th instant. ( ■ ' ■ . '
