THE CEMETERY QUESTION.
3- A SITE ADOPTED. At the conclusion of the ordinary business last night week the City Council went into committee to consider the question of a new cemetery. The proceedings in committee occupied an hour and a quarter, at the end of which time the Council resumed. Upon the motion for committee being submitted, namely. “That 27 acres,of land at Island Bay, offered by Messrs Joseph and Wright, be taken for a cemetery, and that the Melrose Borough. Council be asked to give their conoent,” Councillor Brandon moved and Councillor Anderson seconded as an amendment that in view of the reports male to the Council by Sir James Hector and the Corporation overseer, the onjy one of the bites offered where a cemetery can be established with due regard to the health and convenience of the inhabitants of the city is in the neighhood of Khandallah. The amendment was put and lost by 8 to 3, namely—Ayes 3, Councillors AnderaoD, Brandooj and Willeston; noes 8. the Mayor and Councillors Harris, Worth, Moeller, Fraser, Petherick, Smith, and Brown. Councillor Harris moved a further amendment. and Councillor AVilleaton seconded, That the site of 30 acres at Karori offered by Messrs McKenzie be selected at a price not exceeding £45 per acre. This was lost by 7 to 4, namely—Ayes 4. the Mayor and Councillors Harris, Willeston, and Anderson j noea 7, Councillors Brown, Smith, Petherick, Fraser, Moeller, Worth, and Brandon. The motion reported from committee, for the adoption of tho Island Bay site, was then carried by 7 to 3, namely:—Ayes 7, Councillors Anderson, Worth, Moeller, Fraser, Petherick, Smith, and Brown ; Noes 3, the Mayor and Councillors Willeston and Harris. The site thus selected is at the rear and slightly south of the grandstand on the Island Bay racecourse.
