D jnedin, December 29. The lawn tennis tournament was continued on the Carisbrooke crioket ground on Saturday, thera being a fair attendance. The weather was very favourable for tennis in the morning, but in the early part of the afternoon a shower or two of rain fell, which made the courts somewhat slippery, land at about 4 o’clock the rain came down so heavily that the tournament had to be adjourned until Monday. The champion, ship singles now rest between Messrs WildiDg, Marshall and Fenwick. The two former have to play off on Monday morning, and the |wiuner of the match will try conclusions with Mr Fenwick for first place. It was thought probable that the event would rest between Messrs Harman and Fenwick. They, however, met with the result that the Napier representative put his adversary through after a closely contested match. A considerable amount of interest was evinced in the play, which was excellent on both sides. There was some splendid rallies during the game, and both men were on their mettle. Mr Harman, though, was rather at a disadvantage, being somew hat tired, through having played a very prolonged game previously with Mr Wilding in the Gentlemen’s Doubles against Koch and Collins. The result of the game was that he was beaten in three successive sets, the scores being 6—2, 6—2, 7—5. The only other match that excites any very great interest was that above referred to, in which Mr Harman took part. This was a remarkably well contested match. The first game was won by Harman and Wilding, the score being 6 —B. Then Koch and Collins got tw« games in succession. Then they again scored a game, and the match eventually resulted in a victory for Koch and Collins, who won by three sets to two, tho scoring beiug 6—B, 6 —3, 6—4, 4—6, 6— 3. } The details of the day’s events are as follow :

The fourth day of the Championship Lawn Tennis Tournament turned out less favourable in point of weather than any of the former, the play being interrupted by frequent showers. The heavy rain of the preceding night produced also a weighty effect on the balls. The wind also was high. Play commenced early. The first final decided was the ladies’ championship doubles, the contestants—Misses Gordon and Harman and Misses Orbell and Rattray, the former carrying off the championship. The combination altogether proved too strong for their opponents, the victory being an easy one. In the gentlemen’s handicap donbles, Dr Nedwill and Mr Wilding met Messrs Holmes and Logan in the third round. After a very even game, in which the play was very steady on both sides, the former pulled off the matoh. They claimed the match, as Messrs D. Harman and Redinga were not present. The final round of the ladies’ double handicap was won by the Misses Mackerras and Grant, who contested it with Misses F. and I. Rattray. The play was very even, the overhand service of Miss I. Rattray being particularly effective. In the first set the score stood three all. Misses Mackerras and Grant won two in succession, and got. the last game by their bisque. In the Gentlemen’s Doubles Messrs Fenwick and Jardine, having defeated Koch and

Collins, met Groseman and Marshall in the final, and won after a hard-fought contest. The final round of the Combined Doubles was won by Mr Gibbs and Miss Rattray, who had all the best of a match with Mr Mackerras and Miss Smith.

The first heat of the Single Championship finals played off was the Ladies’. Those left in to contest it were—Miss Gordon (of Christchurch, who is the present holder of the Championship, and Miss Orbell, of the Carisbrook Club. Both were on their best mettle. The play was very even throughout, and the sets were well contested. Miss Orbell’s back-handed ploy was much admired, as also her volleying. Miss Gordon hits under and plays more judiciously than her opponent, while Miss Orbell is the better server. Deuce and vantage were called three times, and in the second set Miss Orbell was twice on the point of winning the set. Eventually Miss Gordon won two sets 1 y 7 to 6. The final for the gentlemen's singles was between Messrs Marshall and Fenwick, and Mr Fenwick won by three sets to one, after good play on both sides. Mr Marshall won the second set, Mr Fenwick not scoring a game. The match was watched with in. tense interest by all the spectators on tho ground. The Exhibition Cup Handicap was not concluded. Messrs Grossman and Fenwick have to play, and the winner was Mr Sherwin in the final.
