THE SAN FRANCISCO SERVICE.
TO THIS EPITOIt OF THE NEW ZEALAND MAIL. Sir,: —In an issue of the Times this week I notice there 13 a prospect of the continuance of the San Francisco mail service for the very moderate payment of Ll3-,250. , Surely our legislators are not going to be ; such fools as to allow this opportunity to slip by. A glance at the return laid on ; the table of the House the other day shows that, the San Francisco service j compares most favourably with the Direct service as regards payments by weight. The proposals now made are moderate enough in all conscience, and much less than the Direct service people are likely to accept for a fortnightly service. lam sure the voting on the question this session will be closely scrutinised by the electors, the majority of whom will j see how different the case i 3 from that which was at issue a year or two ago. Even in cases where a promise was extorted from members to oppose the service last session, electors, now recognising the altered circumstances of the case, will not expect their representatives to hold xq their pledges, and, so to speak, giye a jbllpd vote on the question. The advantages of the San Francisco line are w®ll-kvown, v so jl need x&t burden your epaee with an enume,r f Ttfpn pf tfiem. Some of the bittqrest ,pppon.ppta M the line have made capital out .of j that we have been practically’ subsidising! tho San Francisco service to import wheat s and oats to Australia, in competition' with our own markets. It is, however, idle to argue in this way, Tim South Wales Government, seeing' the the service, have taken very good. iSaiv© that it shall not be discontinued, and s(/ hayp taken the whole of the burden on’ Their eVn dgrs for another year. No action of oursf can affect it ‘one way 'or the; 'other. Xu any case the markets will balance fhemisci-lv.cs!, and if our farmers stand out -foi? such prices as will enable American producers toy and.,their gram in Australia at a’'profit, you 'c&n bet yoiir /‘.JpQttora dollar,’’ as the atikees sayy <fch?,t.th.e latter will quickly find means to get their produce theye. S© much for the now exploded wheat r-I am, &e., „ Commercial. Wefiiogton, September 9,
