TEMPERANCE.

MkCoad. —There was a large attendance at Wesley Church, Taranaki-street, last night week, to hear Mr Coad, a temperanoe lecturer. On the platform were the Revs. W. Lee and H. H. Driver, Miss Pinny, Mrs Plimmer, Messrs King, Price, Luke, and other supporters of temperance. Mr T. "W. Glover occupied the chair, in the unavoidable absence of the Rev. J. Berry. Mr Glover, in introducing the lecturer, spoke strongly on the importance of prohibition, believing that the time was ripe for such a scheme, withont compensation to the present licensed houses. Mr Coad, who was well received, is a fluent and racy speaker. He has a great fund of anecdotes, and displavo considerable humour in his remarks. He remarked that so far as his experience of the Colony went, he found more promises than real help 'toward the cause of temperance. He spoke again on Friday evening at W-sley Church, and his lecture was made specially intereat’ng by his humorous remarks. At the close a large number of those present took tho pledge. On Saturday night he addressed a meeting at the Salvation Army Barracks, and since then he has been holding continuous meetings in Wesley Church.
