TE ARO LICENSING COMMITTEE.

The annual meeting of the Te Aro Licensing Committee was held in the Council Chamber on Wednesday afternoon. Present Messrs Petherick (chairman), Young, Coffey and Hayes. Inspector Thomson represented the police. Applications for licenses for old houses were granted a 3 follows John Prosser, Panama Hotel ; Benjamin Price, Star and Garter Hotel ; Mrs Isaacs, Duke of Edinburgh Hotel; E. A. Armstrong, Imperial Hotel ; Miss M. Dinan, Bank Hotel. With regard to Alexander Smith’s application for a license of the Victoria Hotel, Inspector Thomson stated that the building required to be thoroughly renovated. Hehad visited the hotelon the previous day, and had found the painters in the house, but the repairing had not yet commenced. Mr Gully, on behalf of Messrs Staples and Co., the landlords, understood that the repairs would be executed as soon as possible, ft was also stated that fire escapes had not been provided, as the Committee had _ instructed at the last meeting. Mr Devine, who appeared for the applicant, stated that the delay in putting fire escapes in the building was in consequenoe of the illness of Mrs Madigan, the former licensee. The Committee decided to grant the license on the understanding that the Hotel was provided with fire escapes within three weeks’ time. In the oase of Agnes A. Barker, who applied for a license for the Te Aro Hotel, Mr Devine, who represented tho applicant, produced t w o letters, one from the Chairman of the Westport Licensing bench, and the sergeant of police at that place, testifying to the applicant’s character. The Chairman remarked that the house was a little better conducted since Mrs Barker had taken charge of it, but lie was sorry to say that there were a lot of loiterers outside the place on Sunday, whioh was very obnoxious to people ooming from tho churches. He went on to say that old meu were employed at this hotel to wat'oh outside on Sunday, and give notice to the licensee of the approach of the polioe. This sort of thing was done at almost every hotel in town. The license was granted. In reference to the application of Miss A. Gallagher for a license for the White Swan Hotel, the Chairman stated that complaints had been made to him that the bar had not been kept ns .veil as it should be. The application was granted. Renewals were granted ns follows : —Elizabeth Crawford, Albert Hotel; Rose A. Beattie, Masonic Hotel ; John. Knox Hamilton, New Zealander Hotel ; Jacob Zitnan, Royal Tiger Hotel; Eliza I.evell, Nag’s Head Hotel ; George Evans, Brunswick Hotel ; Samuel Gilmer, Royal Oak Hotel. With regard to the latter. Mr Coffey remarked that it was the only hotel mentioned as first-class in the police report. He was glad t > see that they had one firstclass house in the district. Extensions to 11 o’clock were granted in each case. The Committee refused several applications for an extension until 12 o’clock. The Clerk (Mr J. Ames) was instructed to procure two copies of Mr C. B. Morisou's treatise on the Licensing Act, one -for the Chairman and the other for the Committee. The meeting then adjourn d.
