As there seems to be a question raised of the duty on salt applying detrimentally to large oonaumers in their different manufactures, it is a wonder why steps are not taken to develop the salt springs which at certain places exist in this Colony. The largest spring yet discovered is one found by the late Robert Graham near Taupo. If is said that others exist on private property near Riwaka, in the Nelson district. As this lattei locality is not far from the Collingwood coal measures, it would rot mean a .large outlay for a thoroughly good paying industry to be started there. There are persons in this Colony—nay in this city—who are perfectly conversant with the process of salt manufacture as practiced in the town of Droitwich, in Worcestershire, where the salt springs have been worked for centuries, affording employment to a large number of persons, and realising for the fortunate * owners princely fortunes.
