The usual fortnightly mooting of the City Council was held in the Council Chambers last night week. There wcro present the Mayor, Councillors Richardson, Danks,' Williams, Smith, Potlierick, A. Young, Brarictori, Hefftecn,) 4^ en » J; Young, Edwards, and Co'omb’o: The spdqiai meeting for the purpose of consideririg the annual balance-sheet was further adjourned until the next ordinary meeting, as the printed copies of the sheet had not been circulated in consequence of the auditor having only returned the balance-sheet a few days ago. The water-closet by-law, which had pro* viously been agreed to, was confirmed. The City Reserves Committee reported that they had accepted the tender of Mr J. Sullivan for lease of two lots of Town Belt, as under : Section 3, at 10s per acre per annum ; part section 4 and 5 at 17s per acre per annum. On the motion of the Mayor, seconded by Councillor EcU wards, the report was adopted. A request from Mr G. Glover that his ponies should be allowed to run- on Town Belt near Oriental Bay, was referred to the Committee. The report of the Foreshore Committee was read and adopted. The Fire Brigade Committee reported that the captain of the Fire Brigade had made an application for increase in salary, but they could not recommend that the application be acceded to. The increase asked for was L 26 per annum, the amount now paid by the captain to the Corporation for the rent of his residence. The report was adopted. The Public Works Committee and City Surveyor’s reports wore read and adopted. With reference to the former report some discussion ensued regarding the recommendation that in future no alteration be made in the rate of wages payable to the Corporation laborers without the matter being first reported to the Committee, Councillor Brandon moving—That the words “no alteration be made in the rate of ” be struck out, and the words ‘ ‘ the City Surveyor will be held l’csponsible for the amount of ” be inserted in lieu thereof, and the word from “ without ” to the end of the clause be struck out, and the following be inserted in lieu thereof : “ And that any alteration made either by way of increase or decrease be immediately reported to the Public Works Committee.” After some discussion the amendment was lost. Accounts amounting to L 775 16s 7d wei e passed for payment. The seal of the Corpoi'ation was authorised to be aflixed to Mr Russell’s agreement regarding the VYainui-o-mata watershed, to the agreement with Messrs Stewart and Co. in reference to laying down skids on the Te Aro reclamation , to the agreement with the Tramway Company in regard to extension, and to the Council’s appeal against the United District Board’s charitable aid assessment. After some further business had been transacted the Council rose.
