CASE OF DROWNING AT NAPIER.

(united press association.) Napier, December 11. Charles R. Cleveland, first mate of the ship Piako, was drowned this morning. The ship was lying out in the roadstead, and a boat had. just been sent away to another vessel, when Cleveland’s cap blew overboard. Telling a boy to throw him a line, he jumped into the sea. The line was thrown to him but failed to reach him ; then a life-buoy was thrown, and the life-boat was instantly lowered. Deceased sank soon after striking the water, and being a splendid swimmer, it is thought he must have either been seized with cramp or by a shark Cleveland was 29 yeara of age, and served his apprenticeship in the New Zealand Company.
