(united press association.) Napier, December 11. Charles R. Cleveland, first mate of the ship Piako, was drowned this morning. The ship was lying out in the roadstead, and a boat had. just been sent away to another vessel, when Cleveland’s cap blew overboard. Telling a boy to throw him a line, he jumped into the sea. The line was thrown to him but failed to reach him ; then a life-buoy was thrown, and the life-boat was instantly lowered. Deceased sank soon after striking the water, and being a splendid swimmer, it is thought he must have either been seized with cramp or by a shark Cleveland was 29 yeara of age, and served his apprenticeship in the New Zealand Company.
