FIRE IN AUCKLAND.

(UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Auckland, December 13. An extensive (ire took place in Newton this morning, the damage being estimated at £lO 000. The conflagration originated in a four-roomed house occupied by James Fullerton, a laborer, Upper Queen-street, at 4 a.m. It spread to three houses adjoining, and ultimately the wind blew the burning fragments on to the roof of St. Benedict’s Roman Catholic Church, a large wooden building, which was totally destroyed, with the exception of the benches and the image of the Virgin. From here the fire spread to the old Newton Presbyterian Church on the opposite side of Gladstone-street, which has been recently purchased by the Roman Catholics as a Sunday school. This was also totally destroyed, with five other dwelling-houses, before the flames were subdued. It is believed that all the property destroyed is insured, but particulars have not yet been ascertained.

The- insurances upon the bnilding3 destroyed this morning are : —James Fullertons four-roomed house, £BO in the South British and £6O in the Norwich Union ; Thomas Sealey’s five-roomed house, £2OO in the Norwich Union ; seven-roomed house, occupied by Thomas Moylan, £250 in the Imperial "(owned by St. Benedict’s Trustees).. Moylan’s furniture was uninsured. lhe Presbytery was insnred for £350 in the Imperial: Father Downes’ house, £2OO An the Imperial; the Athenaeum, £SOO in the Imperial, £l5O being reinsured in the JNew Zealand; fourteen-roomed house _ fronting East street, £6OO in the Imperial, £250 being reinsured in the South British ; Mrs Erost’s residence, Geadshore-street, £l5O in the Imperial, half being reinsured in the Standard; James Delahey’s residence, £3OO in the Imperial, £l5O being reinsured m the North British ; St. Benedict’s Church, £6OOO in the Colonial Insurance Company, also reinsured All the above houses, excepting Fullerton’s and Sealey’s, are the property of the Benedict Trustees, who estimate their loss at over £4OOO. The policy of the Colonial Office on bt Benedict’s Church is reinsured as follows:--Phoenix, £500; Norwich Union, £500; South British, £500; Victoria, £500; National, £SOO ; Union, £IOOO ; Sun £SOO ; New Zealand, £SOO ; Equitable, £ooo. This leaves the net loss to the Colonial on this policy at £IOOO. The Colonial also insured J3ealey’s house for £l5O.
