ABUSE OF CHARITY.

A meeting of representatives of the Higway Board of Eden County was held for the purpose of electing a representative on the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board. Some extraordinary statements were made by several members present. Among other things it ■was stated in one case a widow, who was for the purpose of rating £630, that ahe was the recipient of relief. In another case, also that of a widow, the recipient is 33aid to be the owner of a freehold of seven or eight acres near Auckland, a nice house and ■ several milch cows—in fact, quite a complete lomestead worth hundreds of pounds. In a -third case, again that of a widow, it was .stated that she had a son and daugher in fair positions in Auckland; and that she herself iad nicely furnished her home, and amongst Jher Lares and Penates was a piano. In the “ relief ” of these cases, which are of long standing, it is said that about £7OO has been -wrongfully expended. It was also pointed out that if these cases had been referred by -the relieving authorities to the local bodies dor investigation large sums of money might Jiave been saved to the country.
