THE RAILWAY CHARGES ON TIMBER.

A deputation representing the Southland sawmill interests waited on Mr Larnach to call attention to the difference in the rates between the Wellington and Invercargill lines. On the former an allowance of 3d per 100 feet was made upon classified rates on timber for shipment, and this was not granted in Southland. Then the tariff in Wellington was 9d for 21 miles, but on the Hurunui-Bluff it was Is sd, and other rates in proportion. The Minister promised to bring the matter before the Public Works Minister.
