THE PROPOSED IMPERIAL INSTITUTE.

A meeting took place to-day between Lord Mayor Staples and the Agents-General on the subject of the proposed Imperial Institute. The result of the conference, which was adjourned for a week, has not been made known. The Agents-General refuse to give any information, on the ground that they are pledged to secrecy for the present. London, October 14.

The city bankers are urging that the Imperial element in the proposed Imperial Institute should be increased. Lord Mayor Staples will see the Prince of Wales in reference to the Institute, and will disclose his plans on Wednesday.

Melbourne, October 15. Sir Patrick Jennings, Premier of New South Wales, in reply to Mr Gillies’ proposal, considers £20,000 inadequate as a joint contribution by the colonies tw the proposed Imperial Instituted He recommends that £30,000 or £40,000 should be subscribed. The South Australian Government has expressed its inability to increase its proportion of the £20,000 proposed by Mr Gillies. The Victorian Government suggests that municipalities should contribute to the Institute.
