WHITE ISLAND IN ERUPTION.
THE ERUPTION SUBSIDING.
We are indebted to the courtesy of the Postmaster-General for a telegram received by him on Saturday evening from Mr Gordon, Postmaster and Telegraphist at Whakatane :
“ White Island has been in active eruption tc-3ay. At 3.5 p.m. a vast cflumn of smoke and steam was blown out to a height of some hundreds of feet. The sight wa3 witnessed by a uumber of the Whakatane townspeople. No danger is’anticipated, as the wind is from the westward.”
Yesterday a further telegram was received by Sir Julius Vogel to the effect that the eruption appears to have subsided, no disturbance being now visible.
