I SECOND PRELIMINARY SERIES i A second, series of preliminary matches ! was conducted at Carlaw I'ark on Saturday by the Auckland Rugby League, Point Chevalier, the new senior team, although narrowly ! defeated by Mount Albert, made a good im- ! pression, and it has been decided to include i the club in the senior competition, which | commences next Saturday. The principal match, between Richmond j and Ponsonby. provided a wood crowd with I a fine display. The back, play of both teams ! was particularly good, especially the Richmond set. The Ponsonby forwards proved too strong in the loose, and eventually won a well-contested game by 13 points to 8. The score at half-time was 5 jmints each. Among the Ponsonby backs. Grotte, Williams and Nurse, on the win if, played well, while Hull, Lohenet and Hadley were prominent among the forwards. There was & surprise at Sturiws Park, where Otahuhu defeated a strong Manukau team. Improved form was shown by North Shore, which narrowly beat Newton at Carlaw Park. City proved too strong for Marist. Prior t-o the kick-off in the main same, the teams stood in silence as a mark of respect to the late Mr. W. E. Dervan, who was one of the foundation members of the Auckland Hug-by League. Results were:—City, 2<) (tries by Miller, James, Bodman and Matthews, Clarke converting two and kicking two penalty goals), Marist, 5 (try by Shepherd and a penalty goal by Brockliss; North Shore, 8 (tries by Humphries and Taylor, McArthur converting one), Newton, 7 (try by Brady and two penalty goals by Shaw); Ponsonby. 13 (tries by Grotte 2 and Brassey. Boyd and Morrell converting one each), Richmond. 8 (two tries by Lowther, Magill converting one); Mount Albert, 21 (trias by Jones, McKinnon. Gee. Laurent. and Sumich, Sumich converting two and Clement one). Point Chevalier, 18 (tries by Humphries 2, Kirby and Harris, Rich converting two and Humphries one); Otahuhu. 22 (tries by Wellrn 4, Riley converting three and kicking two penalty goals).
